Ramipril

Introduction

Ramipril is an angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension) and congestive heart failure. It is also used to reduce the risk of stroke, heart attack, and other heart complications in people with diabetes, coronary artery disease, or other risk factors.

Indication

Ramipril is used for the treatment of hypertension, heart failure, and to reduce the risk of myocardial infarction and stroke in people with diabetes or other risk factors for coronary artery disease as well as preventing renal and retinal complications of diabetes. It may also be used for other conditions as determined by your doctor.

Mechanism of Action

Ramipril works by blocking the production of the hormone angiotensin II. This causes blood vessels to relax, reducing pressure in the blood vessels and improving blood flow. It also helps reduce the production of excess fluid in the body, which can help reduce symptoms of congestive heart failure.

How Long Does It Take To Work?

Ramipril generally takes at least a few weeks to reach its full effect. However, some people may experience an improvement in symptoms within 1-2 weeks.

Absorption

Ramipril is rapidly and completely absorbed after oral administration. Peak concentrations of Ramipril in the bloodstream occur within 4-5 hours.

Route of Elimination

Ramipril is eliminated primarily via the kidneys, with less than 5% being eliminated in the feces.

Dosage

The dose of Ramipril varies based on the condition being treated and the individual’s response to treatment. Commonly, once daily dosing is recommended, however, it can also be taken twice daily. The usual starting dose is 2.5 to 5mg once daily, which may be increased by your healthcare provider if necessary.

Administration

Ramipril should be taken with food and a full glass of water to reduce the risk of stomach upset. It should be taken at the same time every day for maximum effectiveness.

Side Effects

Common side effects of Ramipril include: dizziness, headache, fatigue, dry cough, nausea, diarrhea, and hypotension. Some of the more serious side effects include anemia, rash, decreased white blood cell count, liver damage, or kidney damage.

Toxicity

An overdose of Ramipril can be fatal, although it is not well documented. Symptoms of overdose include dizziness, confusion, drowsiness, breathing difficulties, and an increased heart rate. Seek emergency medical attention if an overdose is suspected.
